Common questions about MSME/Udyam Registration
No, MSME registration is not mandatory under the MSMED Act, 2006. However, registration is highly recommended as it unlocks numerous benefits including collateral-free loans, interest subvention, government tender participation, and protection against delayed payments. Without registration, businesses cannot avail these government schemes and benefits. Since July 2020, Udyam Registration has replaced the earlier Udyog Aadhaar Memorandum (UAM) system.
Udyog Aadhaar Memorandum (UAM) was the earlier system of MSME registration introduced in 2015, which required self-declaration and issuance of UAM number. Udyam Registration is the new system introduced on July 1, 2020, with significant improvements:
All existing UAM holders must migrate to Udyam Registration before the deadline specified by the Ministry of MSME.
Yes! Since July 2021, the definition of MSME has been expanded to include wholesale and retail trade enterprises under the services category. Earlier, traders and retailers were excluded from MSME benefits. Now, shopkeepers, traders, and retailers can register under Udyam and avail all MSME benefits including collateral-free loans, interest subvention, and government procurement preferences. The classification criteria for traders/retailers is same as other service enterprises: Micro (investment ≤ ₹1 Cr, turnover ≤ ₹5 Cr), Small (investment ₹1-10 Cr, turnover ₹5-50 Cr), and Medium (investment ₹10-50 Cr, turnover ₹50-250 Cr).
